5 Essential Skin Lightening Tips

Could age spots and uneven skin tone be making you appear older? Recent studies have found that YES they certainly are. In fact, they are the number one skin concern that make women appear older. Now don't run to the first lightening product you find. Here are 5 Essential tips you should definitely consider when purchasing a lightening product.

#1- Take a moment to figure out your skin type

It is very important to know whether you have oily, normal, dry, or sensitive skin because choosing a product that is too harsh for you can cause more damage than good.

#2- Choose ingredients that go with your skin type

If you have oily skin, we would recommend using a serum versus a cream. A serum will penetrate more quickly, while a cream may get blocked by the oil on your skin. You may also want to ensure that the product you choose has some form of exfoliating acid that will help to break down the excess oil. Look for ingredients like Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, etc. If you have either normal or dry skin, a moisturizer should work just fine. We would recommend looking for a product with lactic acid to help moisturize any dry spots you may have. Now for sensitive skin types, we would recommend using more natural skin brightening ingredients like arbutin, licorice root, Vitamin C (MAP), Kojic Acid. Avoid products with high levels of glycolic acid. Rather, choose a product with exfoliating enzymes or low levels of lactic acid.

            #3- Analyze your skin color

Light skin types should be able to use any lightening ingredient because of their lower levels of melanin. The darker your skin, the more melanin being produced. The problem with more melanin is that you have to be extra careful with what lightening ingredients you choose. If you pick a product that is too strong, you can easily get even darker pigmentation. Always perform a patch test to ensure that your skin does not negatively react with the product. Remember stronger is not always better, especially when it comes to lightening.

#4- Be consist with your lightening skin care regime.

Follow product usage instructions carefully. Nighttime is usually preferred for applying lightening products; however, with proper protection you may be able to use in the day as well. Remember that the key to successful lightening is avoidance of sun exposure, use sunscreen to deflect free radicals and UVA/UVB damage, keep skin well hydrated, keep an eye out for irritation as this can cause several drawbacks during the lightening process and above all let your skin determine how far it will lighten. Some skin types may be able to lighten several shades, while others may reach their max with just 1-2 shades lighter. This is all determined by genetics.

                    #5- Consult with your physician

Before starting any skin lightening regime, we highly recommend letting your physician know. Some skin concerns like melasma may need hormonal therapy treatments in addition to a good lightening treatment. Hormonal therapy can vary from prescribed medication to natural methods like diet, supplements, and exercise. Feel free to consult with your physician regarding your concern. A blood test may be ordered to determine whether you do in fact have a hormonal imbalance.
